The structure is completely novel. The tire itself and hoop are a stiff ensemble with polyurethane strings keeping it together. Thanks to polyurethane the tire is very flexible.
It was reported that Michelin will open their first non-pneumatic tire factory in December 2014.
So, why are they so excited about this. Flat tires are the most common reason working is interrupted at construction sites and this of course doesn't happen if there's no air. Secondly you don't have to worry about tire pressures. Plus, Bridgestone said that these tires are very silent and there's less vibration, too. In short, they are a lot safer and more effective. The negative aspect is that they will be very, very expensive (about 4000 dollars per tire). Even if they would turn out to be a success not many can afford them.
This type of tire was first introduced in 2004 when it seemed to be very futuristic and, to be honest, it still seems quite distant.
